The purpose of this article is to present an introduction to one of the most influential and misunderstood theories in the history of the Philosophy of Law: legal positivism. This reconstruction is important for two main reasons: a) first, to understand its objectives and foundations; b) secondly, to demonstrate the gradual transformation that took place within the positivist current, from its classical strands, with Thomas Hobbes and, more specifically, Jeremy Bentham and John Austin, to its contemporary strands, with emphasis on the theory of Herbert Hart.
